Grace students triumph over AI in story competition

Grace Christian School students showcased their exceptional creativity and writing skills as they outperformed the highly acclaimed ChatGPT AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot in a recent story-writing competition.

Students from Years 7 to 12 went head-to-head against the AI, and in every year level, the students emerged victorious, reaffirming the power of human imagination and ingenuity.

Grace English Teacher Mr Andy Loh said the competition, titled “The Champions of Humanity Challenge”, was held as part of Grace’s commitment to fostering innovation, critical thinking, and literary skills among its students.

Mr Loh said students were given a thought-provoking question prompt, and they had 40 minutes to weave their imaginative tales, while the AI chatbot, ChatGPT, was given the same question prompt to generate responses.

He said after the completion of the writing phase, all student submissions were de-identified, removing any names or identifiers, to ensure a fair and unbiased evaluation process.

“The stories were handed over to a panel of experienced English teachers who meticulously assessed the creativity, originality and storytelling techniques of our students and the AI,” Mr Loh said.

“Despite the advanced capabilities of ChatGPT, the human touch and imaginative brilliance in our students’ writing shone through, ultimately leading to their resounding victory.”

Grace Principal Mr Hugo de Ridder congratulated the students who demonstrated their ability to think critically, express their ideas effectively, and captivate readers with their storytelling skills.

“The competition not only showcased their individual talents but also highlighted the value of nurturing human creativity and imagination in an era of rapidly advancing technology,” Mr de Ridder said.

“The success of this competition highlights the importance of encouraging students to explore their creativity, hone their writing abilities, and embrace their imaginative side.”
